Inside Climate News is an independent not-for-profit news organization incorporated in the state of New York. ICN is approved by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization and operates as a public charity. It is governed by a Board of Directors and guided by best practices of non-profit management. Our newsroom adheres to the highest standards of factual, fair and fearless journalism, beholden to no interest.
We are supported primarily by unrestricted grants from charitable foundations and tax deductible donations from our readers. In 2019, 84 percent of our budget was used for program-related expenses—to pay staff and contributors to report, write, illustrate and edit articles, for travel, as well as for web development. The rest was divided almost equally between fundraising and management.
Funders have no access to our editorial process, no role in editorial decisions and no oversight over content before or after publication.
ICN seeks support from organizations and individuals who believe in non-partisan coverage of climate issues. We will not accept funding from governments, political parties, elected officials or candidates actively seeking public office. We will not accept donations from sources deemed to present a conflict of interest with our work or that could be perceived as compromising our journalistic independence and integrity.
